‘’Singtel isn’t just expanding the range of products to consumers, we’re innovating to improve the lives of people. We’re definitely more than just Singapore's leading telco.’’

Edward Tan, our first year Management Associate, is having fun with data as a Data Scientist in Singtel. Other than the fact that Singtel is present in 21 countries and serving over 700 million customers, he points out that Singtel has also ventured into the world of digital advertising and geospatial analytics with Amobee and Dataspark respectively. There are plenty of opportunities to learn, grow and make a difference with Singtel’s Management Associate Programme (MAP).

At university level, Edward took up a double degree programme and had the opportunity to delve into various subjects ranging from programming, data analytics, business strategy to financial modelling. This exposure allowed him to tackle various challenges with a wide range of perspectives, allowing him to apply relevant skill sets to build effective and relevant models.

As someone who is positive and driven, Edward believes that “Smiles are the simplest gift you can give anyone.’’ In this article, Edward shares with us about his biggest win and his takeaways at Singtel.

Q: What is your biggest win at Singtel thus far?

A: One exciting data-related project was when I had the chance to work with the GOMO team to build a machine learning pipeline to better understand the customers and helped improve the product to meet customer's needs. For me, it was exciting to apply my knowledge and skills data analytics to a real-life scenario.

Q: What is your favourite #SingtelLife moment?

A: My favourite moment thus far would be the team bonding events that we had, allowing us to bond outside of work and really get to know the people you work with every day. In addition, I also found that I was a fantastic axe thrower by winning the top spot in the team competition. From then on, it seems like everyone became nicer to me…hmmm!

Q: Complete the sentence: The best thing about working in Singtel is…

A: The excellent mentorship offered through the MA programme. Being assigned to a senior leader with a proven track record within the Singtel group was a good learning experience for me. I was able to learn from my boss and seek constructive feedback on how to do better. Being fresh out of college, having someone to guide you and support you on your career journey has been really enriching for me.

Q: Do you have tips for incoming MAs?

A: It's okay to be unsure about your future career path or direction. At this stage, I doubt most of us know exactly what we want to do in life. Instead of worrying about what you want to do, start by finding out what you don't want to do and then work your way from there. Your career is a marathon, not a race.

A marathon, not a race. This applies to the Singtel Management Associate Programme too, a two-year journey during which you’re discover your strengths and weaknesses. The programme offers opportunities to help you build your strengths while working on your weaknesses. What’s more, you’ll be forging friendships with your fellow MAs along the way.
